 40-Minute Organizing and Cleaning 1) Spend a few minutes planning. Chances are, your guests won't be walking into every room in your home. So focus your efforts on those areas they will be in, such as the entryway, the kitchen, the living room and the guest bathroom. 2) Do a quick pick up. Using a large hamper, go into each of these rooms collecting any loose papers. Deliver those papers to an out-of-sight room, such as a home office or spare bedroom, until you have a chance to sort through them. For loose items other than paper, put anything out of place back where it belongs. If you don't have a designated home for a particular loose item, designate a home now, or temporarily put it in an out-of-sight area. 3) Do some light dusting and vacuuming. Pay more attention to those areas that look dusty, such as glass coffee tables. Then, quickly dust the other pieces of furniture with a feather duster. You probably won't have time to pick up every item, so dust around them for now. Vacuum quickly, specifically anywhere you notice crumbs or lint. You probably don't have time to move the furniture, so vacuum around it for now. 4) Sanitize the bathroom. Quickly run a few disinfectant wipes over the countertops, sink and floor. Deodorize the toilet and be sure there's enough toilet paper available. Shine any stainless steel surfaces and mirrors with window cleaner. Add some fresh towels and you're done for now. 5) Add some finishing touches. Dim the lights to reduce the chances of dusty areas being seen and to provide a comfy atmosphere. Light a scented candle. Place some fresh flowers in a vase in a very visible spot.
