I'm having a birthday party for my daughter, Amanda, next week. It's only going to be a small party with about 15 guests. But I know that if I wait until the last minute to arrange things, I'll be stressed and the chances of things not turning out right will be greatly increased.
That's why I've been taking baby steps for the past month. I've been doing small things along the way to ensure everything is in order when the party date rolls around.
For instance, since I knew I wanted to order party supplies on the Internet, I did so a month in advance. The supplies are here and ready. Yes, it's early, but I don't even have to think about them until the party date.
I purchased, wrote out and mailed the invitations two weeks ago. By doing this, I've given people ample time to RSVP and I've given myself ample time to determine how many people will be attending.
Last week, I determined what we would be having to eat-- cake, ice cream and beverages. I made a list and now those items just need to be purchased.
Yesterday, I made a list of children's songs that my husband will be playing on the guitar on party day.
Today, I'll be calling the bakery and ordering the cake, which will be delivered the morning of the party.
My husband will be picking up the ice cream and beverages two days prior to the party.
Since everything has been done ahead and in small pieces, I haven't been stressed or overwhelmed at all. This has taken very little work and I'll be able to concentrate on enjoying Amanda's special day.
This advice, of course, does not only apply to parties, but it applies to anything you need to get done. When you have a goal or project, grab a sheet of paper and a pen. Jot down the baby steps you need to handle and assign those goals to specific dates on your calendar. As those dates arrive, perform and complete each baby step.
Each baby step completed, brings you one step closer to your project completion. Plus, since you're working on your projects in tiny steps spread out on various dates, you should be able to complete your project with little or no stress.
