Replacing Your Running Shoes Regularly is Cheaper Than Physical Therapy
By Christina | July 19, 2009
I haven’t replaced my running shoes since January. I feel like I am at an AA meeting and I am confessing my transgressions to a very large audience. This isn’t a case of vanity or frugality. It is an example of fitness stupidity.
Running in worn out shoes not only hinders your athletic performance, but places you at high risk for running related injuries. Without proper cushioning, treads, and arch support, your shoes are doing you an injustice. The repetitive pounding that is inherent in running needs to be balanced by proper running shoes that can lessen the impact on your joints.
There are some important things to keep in mind when purchasing new running shoes. First, shoes should be replaced every 300-400 miles. If you are not diligent about logging your mileage, aim for replacing your shoes every 2-3 months at most. Second, go to a shoe store that specializes in running shoes. Every foot is different and everyone runs differently. How your existing running shoes show wear and tear determine what kind of running shoes you should purchase to replace them. Be sure to shop at a store with sales help specifically trained to best fit your foot for running and make sure to bring in your old pair of shoes to assist the salesperson in the fitting.
Last, there are many purchases that we make where high price does not equal high quality. This, I am sad say, is not the case with running shoes. Your joint health is worth the extra price of good quality running shoes. If you are suffering from buyer’s remorse, think about how often you will wear your shoes and divide that number into the total cost of the shoes and the total price won’t seem so steep. I guarantee you that you will wear your running shoes more often than any other pair of shoes in your closet.
To get the most bang for your buck and to stretch out the life span of your new shoes closer to the 400 mile mark, make sure that you only run in your running shoes. Don’t cross train in them, wear them to the mall, or walk your dog in them. Running wears down your shoes differently than walking or other forms of exercise. If you keep your running shoes solely for running, your shoes will last longer and support your feet better when it counts the most.
Happy shopping.
