Why seek Ketosis?
By Christina | June 17, 2009
Dieting is certainly not new and the quest for the perfect way to burn excess fat is possibly as old as, well, it’s been around, but what I don’t understand is why not just do it the right way? Eat properly, exercise, limit harmful behavior (eliminate actually) and adopt an overall healthy lifestyle.
People try to totally rid themselves of carbohydrates because they have heard that by doing this the body will only use fat that has been stored as fuel for the muscles. I too would love to find the brass ring that let’s me get into shape quick but the truth is there is no such animal.
Funny enough when I started to research ketosis and the effect of starving the body of carbs I actually read articles that were promoting this as a good idea. I learned in fact that the body will only use fat and proteins for energy once the cabs have been used up. I also was shocked to see that NO muscle should be lost during ketosis unless you are out of fat stores! At least I understand why there is so much confusion on so many topics.
Now I am going to go out on a limb here and cite my own expertise however after 26 years in the business, countless certifications and conversations I feel I bring something to the table with my thoughts, meanderings and opinions.
The body needs carbohydrates for energy, they are the main source of energy in fact. If there are not enough carbs, there is not enough glycogen. Without glycogen the body becomes sluggish and it looks for glycogen to function. Your all powerful body turns to its glycogen stores which are found in the muscles. Guess which vital organ is a muscle? Your heart! Would you like to lose some heart muscle to fuel your search for the ketosis burn?
Here is a trivia question.. What did Dr. Atkins die from? Heart disease! Eat properly, lose weight the healthy way and forget the gimmicks!
