Tae Bo Started It All
By Christina | June 10, 2009
I teach a kickboxing class every Tuesday morning to a standing room only group at a mega cub in Weston, Florida. I have been teaching in the same time slot, same day of the week since 2001. I know this because I was teaching this class when the planes hit the World Trade Center on that horrific Tuesday morning on 9.11.2001.
Amazingly, I have as many, if not more people, in a jammed class teaching the exact same format. Let’s face it, there are only so many ways you can teach a kick, jab, hook, upper cur before you start to feel like you have become repetitive and boring. I spend a lot of time each week researching new moves and learning what else I can incorporate into my classes. Recently I started using Glider Disks as a tool to pepper into the workouts. We use them for intervals not the actual combinations. I also spend time surfing the net for new ideas.
This week I spent some time watching Tae Bo clips online. It’s amazing, the outfits, backdrops and overall look of Tae Bo when it started was as cheesy as it gets but the results were fantastic, these videos were the start of the Cardio Kickboxing craze. Here are a few moves I picked up - or was reminded of that I added to my workout this week and as usual people said this class was “the best ever.” It’s funny, they say that every week…
Reach over head lateral punch - double it
Cross side to side - double it
Single knees - angled - one hand at knee, one hand towards foot
Knee up twice as you shuffle - jab cross - other side
Heel toe with alt punches twice, other leg two knees up, repeat
Squat crawl forward
Step forward from squat, side kick, step back squat - SLOW then speed up
Have fun, be safe and always check with your doctor before you start a workout program.
