Eating Well Even In Tough Economic Times

By Christina | June 9, 2009

There are ways to feed your family a nutritious,  balanced meal without spending a fortune. Here are some tips:

  1. Buy in bulk.  Using discount clubs like Sam’s and Costco are a great way to save money.
  2. Cook your own foods. Pre-mad meals are higher in fat, preservatives and cost more.
  3. Buy frozen fruits and vegetables. Frozen produce is actually fresher and more economical than anything that can be found in the produce and canned sections of the store.
  4. Buy locally. Buy purchasing what is found in your neck of the woods you eliminate the cost of shipping.
  5. Shop in season. Buy the produce that is in season and you will surely see a drastic cost differential.
  6. Make soups. Soups are an excellent way to get all your nutrients and feed a large family. They are often low in calories (think broth not cream) and are quite filling.
  7. Roast a chicken. Roasted chicken is healthy, tastes great and once eaten still has he bones which can be excellent for making chicken stock.
  8. Stock up on staples. Keep beans, brown rice, pasta, oatmeal and barley in the pantry. Barley and brown rice add fiber and are great additions to stretch things like soups, stews and casseroles. Beans are a great source of protein and fiber.

At the end of the day, you may not see huge savings on your first try but if you implement these changes into your overall lifestyle you will start to see the trickle of savings perhaps turn into substantial offsets.
