Remembering a Spinning Friend

By Christina | June 8, 2009

Today’s post is dedicated to a friend who passed away this morning, Eddie Nacht. As I walked into my Spin class at 7am today a few members came up to me and said that one of our own, Eddie, was in a coma. WHAT? It’s funny, you are never ready to hear a friend is hurt, ill, or passing away and yet we know each of us will arrive there at some pre- or not- ordained moment in time.

Eddie had slipped into a coma which came about as the result of food poisoning. Amazing really, one moment you are having lunch with the guys and just a few hours later, darkness surrounds you and one can only hope that your loved ones gone home before you are there to welcome you into the unknown.  Eddie had been battling cancer for a while and apparently, this is why his body could not fight the intruder.

At 7am, as class was beginning, I learned he was ill and it was during our ride that he passed.  I played a song for Eddie during our ride, In the Arms of the Angels by Sarah McLaughlin, a song I have played for other “Spinners” taken too soon and I asked (in my head of course) that if Eddie’s time was near that he be guided by his friends and family. What was truly beautiful was that although I did not announce my intentions with this song, others felt him as well during this time. I can only imagine Eddie passed by at that moment pleased to see that he will be remembered. He said to me once, “no one knows my name.” I never forgot it after he said that because it was such a sad statement. I never forgot his name and made sure he knew that every time I saw him.

We all have an expiration date and no one knows when that is or when our loved ones will be called home.  Don’t wait to experience hurt and loss to appreciate joy and love - today and everyday, live as If Today Were Your Last Day - which coincidentally I think I will play at my 530 class in his memory - a rockin song by Nickleback.
