Move Over Michelle Obama: Rachel Alexandra is Our New First Lady
By Christina | May 20, 2009
In a field of colts, the lone filly stole the day by winning the Preakness this past weekend. You go girl! Rachel Alexandra is the first filly in 85 years to win the Preakness. It’s about time that a girl graced the winner’s circle again.
I must admit that I am a fair weather fan of horse racing. I am a sucker for underdogs winning and I usually tune in just for the Triple Crown races. But, Rachel Alexandra’s win represented so much more than an ordinary horse race. Women all over the world have had to work harder to prove they are just as smart, strong, and powerful as men, if not more so. Apparently, even horses aren’t immune to gender discrimination.
Rachel Alexandra’s owner got a lot of flak for entering her into a race that is usually ‘boys only.’ He said “She wants to run. Gender doesn’t matter. A thoroughbred wants to run, and if a filly is as good as a colt, then she ought to compete.” And compete she did.
Rachel Alexandra’s strength, power, and athleticism proved she was the horse to beat. The message she sent to her fellow colts should ring loud and clear with men as well. Her name may be sweet and feminine. She may be a looker on and off the track. One announcer said “She sure is a beauty!” She may even have brought grace into the arena combined with her power. However, at the end of the day, Rachel Alexandra was not just a pretty face. She was the fasted horse that day period, end of sentence. For the duration of the race, it wasn’t about a filly beating all colts, it was about winning. Rachel Alexandra is most definitely a winner, and not just among horses.
