Travel Constipation - Just Another Perk of Being on the Road
By Christina | May 18, 2009
Just arriving back from a business conference there was one question I could not wait to answer after doing some research, Why do I get constipated on the road? Actually and thankfully, I don’t – much, but my partner who I will not name did. It became a joke where every time he, or she, would enter the bathroom I would ask and he/she would proudly proclaim “NOTHING!” So, why does this happen? Turns out there are several reasons but one that I believe in particular that is most closely related.
- Meal Times – Your body’s clock is set for meals, waking up and yes, even “moving” the waste products out of your body
- Different Diet – Once you leave home the choices of what to eat are often less than the healthier fare you might eat at home and that affects your digestion
- Lack of Water – Flying, drinking less water because you are on the go, dry airplane air, increasing alcohol consumption can all affect your ability to maintain the internal lubrication needed to pass the toxic water you are accumulating
- Less Exercise – Driving or flying are even less physical than sitting at a desk all day and inactivity reduces the metabolism which reduces the chances of a “smooth move”
- Home Base is Far – Upon leaving your home, your body instinctively knows to “hold it.” I thought it was fascinating that this might have its roots traced back to evolutionary times when stopping for the proverbial “poop” my put you at risk from dinosaur or lion (depending on the era).
