Some of the more obscure tips to a longer healthier life
By Christina | April 22, 2009
Here are some obvious and not so obvious ways for you to cut your risk of disease and live a longer, healthier life.
The obvious:
Perform physical activity for 30 minutes a day, eat five servings each day of fruit and vegetables, don’t smoke, drink alcohol in moderation.
The less obvious but equally important:
Genes to play a role in how well you age and how long you live but that is not the main determinant nor is it a guarantee.
1. Don’t retire. Okay, if you do retire, don’t stop being active. Find a hobby you will do regularly, volunteer somewhere, be productive and feel good everyday.
2. Floss regularly. This one always surprises me – first, it amazes me that the plaque on our mouths can be so harmful and second, I just always forget this health tip. Flossing everyday reduces the amount of gum-disease-causing bacteria in the mouth. This bacteria gets into the bloodstream and impacts the arteries which then increases the risk for heart disease.
3. Exercise as much as you can. Exercise affects how well your body moves, responds and functions overall. It helps with your mood, ability to think clearly, balance, lean muscle mass to fat ratio, and skeletal structure.
4. Get plenty of fiber. Eating a serving of whole-grains regularly helps to keep a stable blood sugar level throughout the day.
5. Sleep a minimum of 6 hours each night. Sleep is critical to our health, it is the time when the body heals and grows and regulates itself. Don’t skimp on sleep.
6. Get nutrients from food, not supplements. Evidence shows that vitamins, antioxidants and healthy eating habits help you age better and live longer, no evidence has been found linking those anti-aging qualities to supplements.
7. Stick to a routine. Keep your body in a state of steady equilibrium to strengthen your immune system.
