Sometimes it’s good to play music you don’t really love

By Christina | April 20, 2009

I have been teaching Spin/ Cycle classes since 1999 and pretty much always play the music I like because honestly, if I am not motivated, I am not going to teach as motivating of a class. Lately, I have a participant who likes to bring me music. He is a new “Spinner” and is really into it and loves to make suggestions so I told him, bring me what you like.

Normally I would just play the song or two that someone brings and that makes them happy. This guy, bless his heart, brings me whole hour long playlists - several at a time. The other day I played one in its entirety. It was tough for me because it is so outside of my taste but the class loved it. Moral of the blog - it’s okay to go outside your comfort zone sometimes - you might just grow from it. Here is a sample of his playlist:

House of the Rising Sun - Animals
My First My Last - Barry White
Girls - Beastie Boys
Movin Out - Billy Joel
Stiletto - Billy Joel
Badlands - B Springsteen
Brilliant Disguise -B Sprinsteen
Since You’re Gone - Cars
Trapped - B Sprinsgteen
Layla - Derek and Dominos
Trumpets - Flypside
Relax - Frankie
Happy Birthday - Flypside
Basket Case - Greenday
Crazy - Gnaris Barkley
Over my Head - The Fray
