I have heard Hoodia helps stop hunger, is it true?

By Christina | March 21, 2009

I have tried Hoodia, amongst many other appetite suppresants and I must say I ended up as hungry as ever after I spent my hard earned dollars and swallowed a handful of pills (okay, not a handful, two pills.)

According to the Mayo Clinic, there is no conclusive data to support that Hoodia is an effective appetite suppressant. In fact, there has been no real proof that that it even makes a significant difference in the quest to lose weight.

Hoodia is made from a cactus which is found exclusively in the Kalahari Desert in Africa. It has been reported that the natives of the area eat it to reduce hunger while they are off hunting for hours on end. I am guessing that even if it did work in the desert, the pill form we get is nowhere near the same effectiveness or potency.

There was a small study done, although sponsored by a supplement manufacturer, which concluded that Hoodia is able to affect the segment of the brain which is responsible for controlling hunger. There is really no reason to believe that Hoodia does in fact work so there are more studies needed.
