Is Stevia right for you?

By Christina | March 9, 2009

There is a new sugar substitute on the market, “Stevia”.  Think of green, leafy plants which give you a mood boost and you have an idea of where Stevia comes from. Reportedly in use for centuries, it now accounts for over 40 percent of Japan’s sugar substitute market and is slowly gaining acceptance in the United States.

Stevia is a South American herb with leaves that can be used as a sugar or sweetener substitute. The folks at Stevia claim there is no adverse reaction to the body’s blood glucose levels so it’s safe for diabetics. Stevia has no calories and your body doesn’t metabolize the sweet properties from the leaf or any of its processed forms. This substitute is available in a powder or liquid form. You can use it for baking or just to sweeten your favorite drinks.

It is the opinion of the Stevia folks, that this sweetener has none of sugar’s unhealthy drawbacks, so in effect, it is actually better for you.  In addition, Stevia has been cleared by the FDA and is all-natural, unlike the sugar substitutes Splenda or Equal.

There are several different brands of Stevia for you to choose from: Nu Stevia White Stevia Powder and SweetLeaf. Give it a try and make your own decision if it’s right for you.
