Kettlebells can add intensity to your martial arts practice

By Christina | March 7, 2009

Martial arts incorporates endurance and strength as two key elements to achieving success. Kettlebell workouts are focused on endurance and strength as well as stability training so these two modalities can clearly work together to bring about improvement in general fitness as well as martial arts prowess.

Additionally, here are more reasons why kettlebell training works so well with martial arts training:

Intervals - The quick bursts of energy followed by brief rests are similar to kick boxing rounds as opposed to endurance cardio workouts.

Multi-muscle exercises - When you train the entire body as a single unit, you incorporate many muscles of the body at once.  Kettlebells have a lot emphasis on the leg muscles which is similar to many martial arts techniques where the power comes from the legs.

Grip training - Handling kettlebells develops a strong grip which is adbvantageous in martial arts.

If you are a complete beginner to the kettlebell, it can be dangerous so be sure to start off slowly and move on when you feel you are ready. Be sure to check with your doctor befiore you try any workouts.
