Jump Rope Workout - Get Ready to Sweat

By Christina | February 16, 2009

Looking for an economical way to incorporate cardio training but hate to run?  Jumping rope is a great cardiovascular exercise. Jimmy Connors, former tennis champion, used to skip rope as part of his conditioning routine.

To get started, wear supportive cross-trainers, tennis or basketball shoes while skipping rope because they provide you with plenty of support.  Running shoes are not as good a choice because they won’t give you enough support and are not intended for bouncing on the balls of your feet. Look for a springy wooden or carpeted floor, if none are available, place a thin exercise mat on whatever surface you do have and jump on that.

Jumping rope is a challenging and strenuous workout and could possibly (probably) be hard to sustain for the 30 minutes that you need for a good aerobic workout.   Here is a sample workout you can try to get started:

Warm up by skipping rope for three minutes
Lay on the floor or mat and do as many crunches as you can
Skip rope for another three minutes
Now do as many push-ups as you can
Back to skipping for three minutes
Repeat the cycles above

You can alternate rounds of skipping with crunches and push-ups until you’ve completed 30 minutes or more of exercise.  Another advantage of skipping rope is that you can take one anywhere.
