Running Stairs - A great FREE workout

By Christina | January 9, 2009

When was the last time you intentionally ran up and down stairs?  I will be doing it tomorrow over at the beach on Sheridan Street at the water tower. The main reason I am running it? Because it’s there; because I can; because it’s tough! You don’t often see people running stairs or doing lunges uphill or running sprints unless there is a coach or trainer nearby.  The revving up of the heart and breathing rate combined with bringing it back down workouts are also called interval training, and running stairs may just be one of the best forms of interval training.

Here is a 15 minute “Stair Running Cardio Workout”

Warm up by walking up and down for about 5 minutes. Ideally find a flight of stairs that has at least 20-30 stairs (a track with stadium seating at a high school or local college is ideal). The tower I will be at tomorrow is equivalent to 5 floors of stairs so it’s really tough!

Sprint from the bottom of the stairs to the top as fast as possible and jog down to the bottom; repeat for 15 minutes!  CRAZY

You may be thinking this sounds way too simple but 15 minutes is a long time to do any type of sprints, let alone stair sprints.  This stair running cardio workout beats fancy machines any day!
