Holiday Nutritional Best Bets

By Christina | December 13, 2008

A typical holiday meal can pack in 3500 to 6000 calories!  That’s 2 to 4 days worth of total food intake.  As good as that meal may look, it isn’t worth the excessive calories so here are three tips to help you scale back on the calories

If you must have seconds of something on the table choose:

Green bean casserole

This non-starchy vegetable casserole will only add another 145 calories per cup versus the same amount of sweet potato or mashed potatoes which will add over 325 calories. Want to do even better? Try the roasted or steamed vegetables and ask them to hold the butter or cream sauces; really the veges taste pretty good just as they are!

Which alcoholic beverage does the least damage to the waistline?

Light beer

There are plenty of light beers on the market that actually have less than 100 calories per 12-ounce bottle. Clearly, abstaining from alcohol is best not only for the calories but because often after a drink, you feel free to eat more, but if you must, stick to light beer. Wines are the second best option.  A typical glass of wine has 120 calories per 4-ounce serving. Fruity or smoothie type drinks pile on the calories so stay clear. If you like distilled spirits, try drinks that mix with diet sodas or club soda. A shot of any alcohol is just 80 calories.

Which holiday pie has the least calories?

Pumpkin pie

At the risk of making this sound healthy and sending you clamouring to the table for 6 slices, pumpkin is the lowest calorie pie option.  It is actually on of the healthier desserts because it is packed with beta-carotene, fiber, and lots of vitamins and minerals. A slice has approximately 300 calories and if you chose pie with crust made of oats or graham crackers instead of butter-based crusts you have just made it even healthier!

Enjoy your holidays but make good choices so that January is not about regrets but about continuing your road to health and wellness..
