Three Spin Classes in 3.5 Hours
By Christina | November 1, 2008
Can you say “ouch”? I have a bad habit of saying “yes” whenever a fellow instructor asks me to sub a class and sometimes I say yes to too many people on the same day without realizing it.
My ex-husband has a running joke about my handy dandy agenda and how I keep everything neatly tucked in there so that I never miss an appointment. The joke is I don’t have an agenda and I rarely remember an appointment or class without someone reminding me. This was the case a few days ago and I think the lesson was well learned, hopefully.
About 3 weeks prior to the fateful Sunday a co-worker asked me to cover her 7:15am Spin class and without hesitation I said “sure”. Two weeks later another instructor asked me to cover his 8:30am Spin and again, “of course” was my answer. I went about my week and I received emails from each of them reminding me that this was the week I was covering the Sunday Spin for them. I also have a Sunday Spin at 940am.
Panic set in, oh no, three spins back to back. The immediate discomfort was not the physicality of the challenge, it was the boredom of being in that room with three sets of participants and having to be cheery and peppy and motivating for three classes! One class, I am a rockstar. Two classes, I am fun with attitude. Three classes, I stopped caring why you are there and if you are having a great ride!
I tried to find coverage, called every other instructor and lo and behold everyone had plans Saturday night and they did not want to have to wake up to teach a class, NICE! I arrived and felt up for the challenge. The first hour was great. Music was pumping, people came to really work and I was psyched. The second hour I felt just as good for most of it, I was pushing and screaming and really having fun. The third hour rolled around and suddenly my legs started tingling and my where the body meets the saddle area was not happy with me at all.
I got through the class but spent the rest of the day in discomfort and quite fatigued. There are two lessons to learn from this experience, well three.
- Learn to say No
- Write down my appointments
- Train for endurance events to prevent injury and pain
Will I learn from my experience? No, of course not.
