Halloween Yoga

By Christina | October 31, 2008

Children as well as many adults love Halloween.  Not because of the candy or trick or treating but because we have an excuse for a day to wear a mask or costume to disguise who we are and let out a side of ourselves rarely seen. It’s a day we get to try on a new persona. We are free to release our inhibitions, free to be someone else.  In a costume we can take on the qualities we have on.  For example, a witch can be crabby, a princess can be over the top high maintenance, and a vampire can be sly and dramatic. We can not just act the part, but feel the part as well.

In yoga, there are asanas or poses that also allow you to try on a mask so to speak. In a pose we can assume that pose’s energy.

In warrior pose, we have courage and open-heartedness

In eagle pose, we reflect with broad perspective on our lives

In tree pose, we can experience the powerful experience of grounding through roots and lifting our branches to the sky

In lion’s pose, we are free to let out a mighty roar and release inner tensions

Halloween is a great time to try on a few asana “masks and costumes” and allow yourself to experience the stories, the symbols, and the qualities associated with each. Be playful, have fun, be open.
