Is there a difference amongst pedometers?

By Christina | October 30, 2008

Pedometers are small devices that you clip onto your hip or belt and it counts your steps. Millions of people use pedometers as part of a program to measure progress as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Pedometers range from cheap to expensive; inaccurate to quite precise. The following pedometers have been ranked and rated according to accuracy from most accurate to least:

  1. Yamax SW-200, Yamax SW-701, New Lifestyles NL-2000, Kenz Lifecorder. America on the Move (X120), Yamax Skeletone, Walk 4 Life LS 2525
  2. Omron HJ-105
  3. Freestyle Pacer Pro, Accusplit Alliance 150, Sportline 345
  4. Sportline 330, Oregon Scientific

The pedometers from group 1 are excellent, high quality pedometers made from research-grade instruments. Group two are good selections for monitoring your progress and promoting health. The third group (Omron HJ-105) is accurate for lean people, but much less so in some obese people. The fourth group are not really good pedometers according to consumer reports.

The best pedometers are typically sold through online sites because this helps to keep costs down.  Reports state that the pedometers sold at Wal-Mart and Target tend to be of lesser quality.
