Without a goal how will you know when you’ve achieved it?
By Christina | October 18, 2008
It typically goes something like this: You decide you need to reach a fitness goal you stumbled upon when your pants didn’t zip up, you were winded after teaching your five year old how to ride a bicycle, or the pinch an inch test turned into “holy cow check this out I can pinch a foot!” The next step is joining the gym, then taking a class or hitting the weights then quickly, I have no time or desire for exercise.
Without a well thought out plan or goal, you are destined to fail. I believe this is as true in life as in the gym. Without a benchmark you are striving to reach, you get lost and lose momentum.
Here are a few tips to help keep you on the road to reaching your fitness goals:
- Be Realistic: Your goal should be challenging, but realistically achievable. Don’t set you sights too low, but also don’t set yourself up for failure
- Measurable: Your goal should be stated in quantitative terms such as miles per week, pounds or inches, time for distance, or to achieve an event by a date
- Date It: Set dates by which you will attain the goal
- Write It Down: Your goal should be in print so you can review it
- Track your progress: Check on yourself periodically and make sure you are sticking to the plan
- Celebrate success: Along the way when you reach new milestones, it is time to celebrate. And when you achieve your overall goals, don’t hold back - reward yourself
