Why Run a Marathon? Because It’s There!
By Christina | October 2, 2008
Not all challenges have happy endings but then that’s not what the challenge is about necessarily. If you were to have asked explorer George Mallory, who died attempting to scale Mount Everest, why he wanted to do it, his response would have been and was: “Because it’s there.” This answer says everything and nothing depending on who you ask. The person with the urge to explore and to see what lies beyond the next bend in the trail or the next mountain, understands this answer. That person would not ask the question because the answer is obvious. To the questioner, however Mallory’s answer says nothing. Anyone who needs to ask this question does not feel the urge to explore and is incapable of understanding any answer.
The question “Why run marathons?” is the same. If you are asking, you probably won’t be running one soon. If you run you know and the answer is already inside. Those who need to ask might understand an answer about health or other tangible benefits, but they will never understand the real answer. Because it’s there!
