Capoeira, even the name sounds difficult

By Christina | September 12, 2008

As Fitness Director for a large fitness facility, I have had the pleasure of introducing our members to several different exercise class formats.  One of the most fun was Capoeira, an Afro-Brazillian martial-art. It’s like an acrobatic fight with lots of kicking.

People doing Capoeira look as if they are fighting and dancing at the same time.  There are kicks, push ups and cartwheels - CARTWHEELS and if you get really good, a few gravity-defying moves, like jumping up and then twisting in the air a few times before landing.

We brought a demo class to the club and so I decided to try it. I am in great shape, ok good shape, so I decided to try. Capoeira is really hard!   A few of us were laughing at how incredibly difficult this all was. Lunges, jumps, rolls, push ups!You can do all the cardio you want on a stationary apparatus, but you never really know what you’re capable of until you have to do a cartwheel in front of the whole class. In addition, we had to jump like frogs across the entire floor and then immediately turn around and do it back.  I recommend this class for anyone looking for a challenge.

This is an excellent challenge if you are looking to try something new. Just know it is not easy and your instructor should know you are a beginner.  As always, ask your doctor if Capoeira is right for you.
