Tips to help you remain illness free

By Christina | September 7, 2008

We all know what to do to try and stave off illness but every once in a while a gentle reminder is a good idea.   The following is a short list of healthy habits to adopt:

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) recommends these simple steps as part of a healthy routine:

  1. Wash your hands often - this is the number one healthy habit in the fight to prevent the flu. Keep alcohol-based hand sanitizers in your purse, car, and backpack for use when soap and water aren’t available.
  2. Do not touch your eyes, nose, and mouth as much as possible.
  3. Keep a “healthy” distance away from sick people.
  4. Stay home when you’re sick.
  5. Stop the spread of germs by covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
  6. Exercise regularly, get enough rest, and eat healthy, balanced meals.

Respectfully suggest that recommending alcohol-based hand sanitizers is actually the wrong approach; these products destroy protective skin cells that are intended to protect against easily transmitted ‘bad bacteria’, germs and viruses.

They’re also flammable, they cause dry/irritated skin, and they lose their effectiveness within seconds after applying. They also damage a wide range of materials, from floor wax to clothing to jewelry.
Instead-there are a vaiety of alcohol-free, rinse free hand sanitizer products, many of which use the organic compound benzalkonium chloride as the active–this is used in leading antiseptics (including Bactine) as well as many other health care products, including spermicidal foams.
One of the more popular brands is called Soapopular (now the #2 hand sanitizer at Amazon, behind the ubiquitous, alcohol-based Purell), and endorsed by leading mags, including Oxygen Magazine, Parent Magazine and many others.
