Got Meditation?
By Christina | June 10, 2008
I love to meditate and so I do not understand when people say it is a waste of time but it didn’t happen overnight. It took a few months of doing it to learn to slow down and enjoy being still.
A problem I think with getting people to want to try meditation is that the approach is all wrong. Once you say that meditation will free you from all tension, the whole practice is ruined. From there on you are not sitting completely relaxed, meditating, but you are tense, looking at the state of relaxation which you thought was your goal. Trying to reach out to it you become more tense.
Our minds and bodies are always in motion and not steady at all. Physically we are tense, mentally we are distracted. When there is a problem you are consumed by it. You seek help in meditation and go to a teacher. The teacher says, “Sit down and repeat a mantra.” While you pay attention to the mantra, which is totally unrelated and unconnected with the problem you are really trying to solve, the problem gets dissolved; at least for that moment.
There is no more mystification about meditation than this. The teacher, by suggesting that you sit down and go on repeating a mantra, has made you temporarily forget your problem. A problem that is forgotten does not exist, unhappiness that is forgotten is happiness. Your problem may return, but never mind. If you can find peace and happiness while in the midst of turmoil that is marvellous; the unhappiness was a mental state, nothing more than a mood.
