Spinning for stress relief. Are you sure?
By Christina | June 2, 2008
As a group fitness instructor I am typically the benefactor of good feelings and happy vibes. Every once in a while however tensions flare up and things go a little “off”. It started in my Sunday morning spin class last week. A couple of, shall we say, loud members were really into the energy of the class and got a bit out of hand. Nothing awful, just being loud and saying things like, “What do you got? Come on old man! and Take your training wheels off the bike.” All silly and fun but after 10 minutes of the constant banter it started to get old and tired and frankly, annoying.
I asked the class if anyone was bothered by their noise and many said they were so I told the guys to please stop and they did… for a few moments. Once they started up again I had a feeling a member was going to say something; and then one did. She told them to shut up. That was as well received as a punch to the face so one of the guys told her something which I missed… well, long story short, I notice some commotion and hear the comment, “Lady when I’m your age, I hope I am dead.” WHAT? Oh that’s not good.
Class ended, tempers were flaring, I had to calm a bunch of people down and promised that the mood would be calmer next time and it will. Funny enough, a day later I received an email with a story about some New York Spinners who got into an argument in class and ended with one member tossing a bike at another. Now that’s crazy!
All told, exercise should be a fun, safe release of stress not the cause of it. Enjoy your training timeand be courteous to those around you.
