Lose 10 pounds in 6 weeks

By Christina | May 26, 2008

I read the above headline recently in Yahoo! in the Health articles section and it struck me as odd.  Not odd because you cannot lose 10 pounds in 6 weeks but odd because it does not seem like a huge amount of weight to lose.  It was actually refreshing to see the title of an article which was not about sensationalism but about practicality and health.

I have seen diets that promise you will lose 20 pounds in 2 weeks and workouts that guarantee if you squeeze a ball for 4 minutes a day for 30 days you will have legs like Tina Turner’s. To see an article that boasts a healthy, manageable weight loss program gave me faith that some people are interested in health and wellness instead of fads that do not lead to long term change.

The article offered five tips to reach the 10 pound goal:

  1. Measure your daily serving of cereal before you sit down to eat it.  Often, we serve closer to two servings without realizing it.  Reduce the amount of cereal and reduce the calories.
  2. Pass on the late night snack.  In an attempt to keep ourselves awake after dark, the body asks for sugar or carbs. Instead of giving in to the cravings, brush your teeth and steer clear of the kitchen.
  3. Eliminate one tablespoon of butter a day from your diet.  Doesn’t sound like much but just removing that one spoonful each day will cut 4200 calories at the end of 6 weeks.
  4. Resist the urge to ”pick” or “add”.  If adding ketchup to our foods adds calories, can you imagine what adding mayo does? Ever pick a tater tot from your child’s plate? You are piling on the calories without really enjoying them.  Stop.
  5. Try mustard instead of cheese.  You will cut your fat and calories by removing the cheese from your sandwich and replacing it with 5 calorie per serving mustard.

There they are, easy calorie cutting ideas anyone can do without feeling like they are restricting themselves.
