Weekly Meditation - Be Present, Be Still

By Christina | May 24, 2008

Have you ever had anything else on your mind just before an accident?  I don’t mean ten minutes before, I mean immediately before, the nano-second before impact?  The reason I ask is because that’s an example of being present in the moment.  Just before you get up to give a speech, your palms are sweaty, your heart is racing, you are right there in that instance.  That’s what I mean by “being present.”

Why does it matter that we practice being present?  Well, think about your life right now.  Do you lose your keys in your home?  Do you walk into a room and forget why you entered it? This happens because you are living in a multi tasking world where you are bombarded by pressure to over achieve and fill every second with work and planning and rearing children and even fun.  When was the last time you just sat there.  Yes, exactly that - just sat there.  Nothing to do, nowhere to be, no one waiting for you, just you alone in the moment.

Find a quiet place today where you can be present in the moment. Maybe you enjoy the outdoors, sit outside and breathe.  Sounds easy doesn’t it?  It is not easy at all. Being present and being still is perhaps the hardest thing you will do.  So, sit outside, breathe the air, watch the clouds.  Do nothing and be happy that you are doing nothing.

In this stillness you will find you. In this quiet, you will hear your inner voice.  In this place lies energy and empowerment.  Breathe.  Be Still. Be Present.

Now for the rest of the day, be present in all you do.  Fight the urge to multi-task.  Resist the need to fill every second with movement.  When you speak to someone, do only that one thing, speak to someone with all your attention.  When you drive put the phone down, turn the radio off, and be quiet.  Learn to be comfortable with yourself and with your inner sounds.

See how much you learn about yourself.
