I work out a lot but I never know if I am working out hard enough.

This is a common question.  There are many ways to gauge your workout level and intensity.  One way to check is to wear a heart rate monitor and monitoring your beats per minute as you workout.  If you are in your training zone the device will let you know.

Another way to measure your workout is by taking a perceived exertion test.  Just ask yourself how hard you are working.  That one leaves a lot of room for personal bias.

Finally, the best way in my opinion if you do not have a heart rate monitor is to sing a song out loud.  Okay, not too loud because the guy on the treadmill next to you is going to think you have lost it.  Sing the words to a song and see if you have to stop and take some deep breaths while you sing.  You should have to breath deeply every second or third word.  That’s it. If you can sing along without missing a beat, rev up your intensity and if you can barely get out a syllable, slow down.
