I hear about bad knees all the time, how much of that comes from obesity?

By Christina | April 28, 2008

Despite the fact that there are many factors affecting musculoskeletal disease, it seems obesity is a constantly emerging  key factor. Obesity is linked to the beginning and progression of musculoskeletal conditions of the hip, knee, ankle, foot and shoulder.

Research until now has focused on the impact of obesity on bone and joint disorders, such as the risk of fracture and osteoarthritis. It seems however, that there are new findings indicating that obesity may also have a profound effect on soft-tissue structures, such as tendon, fascia and cartilage. It makes sense that the more stressed placed on the soft tissue, the more work and the greater potential for injury. Amazingly, there is very little resaerch done to verify that obesity affects the soft connective tissue but the facts remain:  the incidence of obesity is up and the numbers of connective tissue disorders are up.  Seems clear to me, it is just one more reason to get into shape and loss that weight that may be causing you many diseases and discomforts.
