When the trainer becomes the trainee…

By Christina | April 27, 2008

I have blogged before about a client named Ryan, (no names have been changed to protect the innocent). I was training her for a few weeks and then realized she’s much stronger than I am so we decided to have a little fun. We would each come up with exercises to challenge one another. We did that twice and again I realized she was still kickin’ my butt. So, we came up with yet another idea. This time, Ryan would train me. (This blog could also be titled “How To Lose Income As A Trainer”)

Ryan proceeded to lead us in a one hour legs work-out. We did walking lunges with a barbell, then we did walking lunges with pulses, then walking lunges single leg lead, then, big surprise, walking lunges with bands around our ankles, then squat jumps, followed by reverse lunges (Are you seeing a pattern here?), after an hour of that routine I felt pretty good.

Fast forward to the next day. I woke up, put my feet on the floor, and my legs felt like bricks. My glutes, quads, and hamstrings were in so much pain. I LOVED it!! What I had not been able to do to Ryan, make her sore, she did to me in one hour without the CPT after her name (Certified Personal Trainer).  It’s funny, sometimes you try to make a workout intense but safe and not too hard and then you try to make it grueling and when the results are the same you wonder what else you can do. I think this week I will strap her with a bungee cord to a truck with the gear in park and have her pull it up and hill and see what happens!  Oh and of course I will be sitting in the drivers seat honking the horn.

All good though, I lost some revenue but gained a friend and workout partner who pushes me and that’s something I really needed.
