I have been taking indoor cycling classes and I swear my butt is bigger. Is this possible?

This question is a very common one and I can certainly appreciate your concern. I have spoken to many women in my 20 plus years of personal training and group exercise teaching and I have not met many women who desire to get bigger. (Of course, there are always excpetions.)
You probably already know the secret to getting in shape, a healthy eating plan, regular exercise and weight training. An indoor cycling class burns an average of 500-650 calories which definitely counts as cardio exercise and that won’t make you bigger but how about those hills you climb in class? I have heard many people say because there is high resistance on climbs it is like lifting heavy weights so they avoid the hills. I have also heard women comment their pants are getting tighter since they started to cycle.
I have explained the most likely reason their clothes are fitting differently is that they are working new muscle groups, building new muscle and losing body fat. Climbing builds strength, which is why it’s an integral part of the cycling classes. More strength, more muscle, faster metabolism. It is a good thing to have muscle even it means you are developing new areas.
