Gliding Discs, There is Always Something New

By Christina | March 22, 2008

Have you heard of Gliding Disks?  Gliding discs are one of the many exercise tools on the market that tout the many benefits and changes it can bring to your body.  I typically am skeptical of all new trends in fitness mainly because there are so many that have come and gone and even more that promise rock hard abs or buns of ore if you do the exercises for 3 minutes a day!  Come on, does anyone fall for these gimmicks?

I would not say that all new fads are a fake or a waste of money. In fact, I love many of the innovations that have come about throughout the years.  When The Step came out in the 80’s I thought, “Might as well get certified in it but I doubt it will be around for long.”  Back then The Step was made of wood and quite heavy, not to mention hard to store.  Spinning is another fad which has lasted and is now a staple in most gyms.  Like those there are quite a few success stories in the “Fitness Fad turned Trend” world.

The Gliding Disks are, in my opinion, a good tool to have in any trainer’s aresenal of “toys”.  I like them as much as I like boxing gloves and pads, a mat, the ab wheel, exercise bands and medicine balls.  There are many reasons I like the Gliding Dics:

  1. They are small, lightweight and portable
  2. They can be used for legs, core and upper body
  3. They are non impact so lunges for instance can be done without having to land all your weight onto one leg
  4. They are an unstable surface without the bulk of a BOSU ball

Overall, I just like them.  In fact, I never buy anything on impulse and yet today I bought another pair of gliders and 3 DVD’s!
