I have heard the core is the power house in Pilates, what is the core exactly?

The core of the body is where all movement originates. Unfortunately this very important part of the body is often overlooked unless sit ups or crunches are being performed and then probably not enough to really create the strength and stability needed. To get your core as strong as you need, you need to understand what your core is. Your core is the area of the trunk and pelvis - the abdominals, hips, glutes, and shoulders and is where your center of gravity is located.
A strong core gives you protection for your back, controlled movement, a stable sense of balance, and a platform for sports. When your core is strong you have stability and harmony throughout your body and are at lowered risk for injury. To help you get started with a core strengthening program try taking a Pilates class and be sure to let the instructor know you are new to the class as well as if you have any injuries. Be sure to check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program.
