I Love Sushi, Would Brown Rice Make it Healthier??

By Christina | March 2, 2008

This an easy question to answer.  The reason brown rice is better for you is related to the processing of the rice.  The process of producing brown rice removes 67% less of the outermost layer of the rice than does the process of producing white rice.  In that outermost layer there is 67% more B3, 80% vitamin B1, 90% of B6, more than half the magnenese and phosphorous, 60% of the iron and all of the fiber. There certainly is a compelling reason to switch your sushi to brown versus white rice.  Here is a brown rice recipe to get you started:

Make The Rice - This is the most important part of the sushi process when you think that unless your rice sticks you will just be eating rice with vegies on a plate.

Mix 1 1/2 cups of brown rice with 3 cups cold water. Bring to boil and immediately cover and turn to lowest heat setting. Leave for 40-45 minutes. When done, add rice vinegar and stir. Transfer to a colander to cool quickly.

i made my california rolls today using brown rice. i mixed toasted sesame seeds in with it after cooking. i used a can of real crabmeat mixed with cream cheese, mayo and horseradish. piled on the veggies and man they were good!! i love the brown rice, although not traditional, neither are california rolls. you can put all sorts of stuff in nori, just have fun and enjoy!
