The Lawmakers in Mississippi Say.. Nevermind to the Food Ban for the Obese
By Christina | February 8, 2008
In case you did not read my previous post on this topic, it seems an official in Mississippi thought it might be a good idea to weigh diners as they entered eateries to be sure they were not above the 30 BMI which is the obesity standard. They proposed to have scales at the stores to these restaurants and threatened to revoke permits if the restaurant was caught serving a fat person food.
Republican Representative John Read from Gautier said he never really thought his bill to limit food service to the obese in Mississippi restaurants would ever pass, he just wanted to “shed light” on the problem of obesity facing our population. Seems to me there are smarter, less controversial ways to shed light on problems that don’t involve writing a bill that is crazy in it’s scope that it has to be retracted by its author as nothing more than a wake up call.
Thankfully Mr. Steve Holland, Democrat, said he will be shredding the bill and that he feels it would be too oppressive of government to demand that restaurant owners police their patrons and decide who gets served… anyone see Seinfeld’s soup nazi episode? At least all the attention this received when it hit the news brought a quick resolution to what was a serious mistake in judgment by a Representative of our government.
