Rock Music for Yoga?
By Christina | February 2, 2008
I have been teaching yoga for awhile now and something I want to start doing is playing pop, rock and maybe even trance music in my classes. Sounds different and it may even appear to be contrary to what yoga is, but is it really? Is yoga defined by its music?
I don’t think yoga is anything more than what it’s definition states.. the yoking or joining of the mind and body, the cesasation of thought, quieting the mind so the body can speak and on and on. Yoga is not a particular pose or practice. It is not a movement or even breath, It is not meditation or release of the stress from external sources. It is all those things and much more. Yoga has eight limbs and of those eight one is breath, one is the asana or physical poses, one is release from distractions and another is single point focus. There is no mention of what music to play, there is no mention of straps or blocks or mats. There is no mention of pillows or water bottles… so are any of those wrong?
I think yoga is what you NEED it to be. That may be power one day, restorative another, soft new age tunes, or Rolling Stones rock. Try it all with an open mind and experience the differences. What a beautifully open way to live your life, experience all there is without looking for good or bad, just for the experience.
Namaste
