Breaks Make Cardio Workouts Better

By Christina | December 29, 2007

The rate at which your body burns fuel may be increased by breaking up your intense workouts into two segments with a 20 minute break in between.  That’s right, taking a break may be good for you.  How do scientists know this to be true?

It is actually a very interesting finding… A study was done using two groups of men; one group worked out for an hour and half at high intensity and the other worked out for 90 minutes (also at high intensity) with a 20 minute break in the middle (for  total of 110 minutes).  The results showed the group that took a break had elevated blood levels of free fatty acids this is indicative of greater fat burning.  The conclusion - taking a break means greater fat burning.  Here are some other fat burning workout tricks:

You want to do cardio first because you are likely to be more tired after cardio.  In other words, if you planned on doing a leg workout and start with the weights, you will do your leg routine and probably skimp on the cardio because it is so tiring.  However, if you do the cardio first and then your routine, you are likely to get through all your exercises regardless of how much cardio you did.

Building muscle means faster metabolism so by adding muscle to your body you are burning calories while you rest and burning fat.
