The Most Fattening Holiday Foods

By Christina | October 18, 2007

The holidays are almost here and while most people are planning holiday parties and preparing to buy gifts, there is a need to evaluate what you eat at this time of year.  Many of us will put on what are known as “holiday pounds” because they are not aware of what they should and more importantly, should not be eating.  Here is a list of the most fattening holiday foods to either avoid or limit the quantities you are eating. The Holiday/ Christmas Cheeseball is loaded with fat from the cream cheese is a popular holiday snack tray favorite.

Christmas Pudding is a British favorite loaded with sugar and fats.

Churros con Chocolate are a favorite in Spain.  Beware however, the chocolate is loaded with sugar and the fat is compounded due to the deep frying of the churros.

Egg Nog is sure to be at every holiday party this year.  The eggs, sugar and whipping cream make this a serious no no.

Fried Carp is an Austrian dish which is deep fried fish prepared with shortening, not butter.

Creamed Corn sounds healthy, it is corn after all.  The heavy cream the corn is mixed in makes this dish one you should pass on.

Potato Cakes are a favorite during Hanukkah festivities but like the creamed corn, although potatoes are healthy on their own, they are prepared in a fattening manner because they are deep fried.

Roast Goose is great for any holiday meal but the meat of the goose is high in fat.  A serving of roast goose may contain as much as 784 calories, 51 grams of fat and 16 grams of carbohydrates.

Sweet Potato with Marshmallow is a fat trap when you add the butter, sugar and marshmallow.  Try the sweet potato on its own.

If you look over the list, you can start to see the patterns that make holiday foods high in fat and calories.  Steer clear of fried and fatty foods and get through this holiday season without the extra 5 to 10 pounds some of us will gain.
