Top Ten Personal Training Tips

By Christina | October 16, 2007

Here are some tips from a Personal Trainer to help you keep yourslef on track and reaping the voluminous benefits of exercise…

 1. Train smart, not just hard - You want to have a goal in mind when you start a program like lose weight, gain muscularity, increase aerobic capacity, enjoy more stamina and energy or boost self esteem.

2.  Relax - It sounds like a contradiction but for various reasons relaxing assists in optimal performance. Stress inhibits the body’s ability to function at its peak and thus limits results.

3. Train in the morning if possible - In the morning you are fresh for the day and the workout will boost your energy. In the evening hours if you workout too close to your bedtime you may find it difficult to fall asleep.

4.  Make exercise part of your regular routine - Working out is as important, maybe even more, than many of your daily meetings that you log into your agenda so be sure to prioritize your health and wellness time.

5.  Workout with a partner - It is harder to cancel on someone who is couting on you to meet them for their workout than it is to get side tracked on your own.  You will find the added motivation fun too.

6. Workout with a Personal Trainer - Working with someone who knows how to use the often difficult to manipulate machines can make the difference between injury and achieving goals.

7. Start slow! - If you have not worked out in 3 years, you don’t want to run 5 miles and lift your maximum capacity of weights in your first session.  Take your time, start slowly and see how your body reacts.

8. Motivate intrinsically - This means be your own cheerleader.  Set realistic goals and celebrate the accomplishments.

9. Educate yourself about supplements - There are members and trainers and just about anyone who will have opinions on what you should be taking to help you reach your fitness goals.  Be sure you are educated so that you are not overwhelmed or talked into taking what you should not.

10. Make YOU the reason you are working out - If you are your reason for exercising you will be much more succesful in your quest to achieve a lifetime commitment and behavioral change. However, if you are doing it because someone is pressuring you, you may not stick to it once that person has moved on.
