How much water should I drink everyday?

By Christina | October 15, 2007

This question has many answers which depend on you. They vary depending on your activity level, where you live, and your health.  Because there is no single answer, you need to get to know yourself and body to be the best judge.

Your body is made up of 60%water.  There is no system in your body that is not dependent on water for proper functioning.  The flow of water through your body is responsible for carrying toxins away, carrying nutrients to cells, and maintaining moisture to the lining of such areas as the ear, nose, and throat.  If you do not have enough water, you will suffer from dehydration which affects not just internal body function but affects your body’s ability just to perform everyday tasks.  At 2% dehydration your body’s ability to perform physical tasks is already reduced, once you are thirsty, you are dehydrated.

You might think because you have a sedentary lifestyle you are not losing water and risking dehydration but the truth is we lose water from breathing, passing urine and bowels as well as perspiring.  The current daily recommendation for water consumption for the average adult is 9 cups a day for women and 13 cups a day for men, that is an increase over the once believed 8 cups a day.

If you exercise, live in hot or humid climate, high altitude, are ill with diarrhea or are nursing you need even more water. You can meet your water requirements not just by drinking water but also by eating fruits and vegetables such as cucumbers and watermelon which are almost 100% water.
