30 Weeks Pregnant and Feeling Strong

By Christina | September 16, 2007

Wow, is it 30 weeks already?  Amazing isn’t it.. just the speed at which time passes is incredible.  March 9, 2007 this little girl I am carrying inside of me was in her most primal, most basic life stage - just a few cells and if you go back to the 8th of March, she was just a thought, or should I say a wish. Here we are 30 weeks later (actually 28 because the “how pregnant are you” clock starts from the date of the last period).  What have I experienced these last few weeks?Well, I am still teaching all my classes, okay, not all out but teaching them none the less.  I feel as if I am not pregnant at all actually until I start to jump in kickbox and feel my body’s weight and the force of gravity on certain areas taking hold, or maybe while I am spinning and I have to go to the bathroom for the 4th time because I am kneeing my belly and that seems to make my daughter launch an assault on my bladder, or maybe when I try to run in boot camp and that just isn’t happening.  Whatever the activity the truth is I can do them all with some modifications.

Pregnancy really doesn’t have to be the end of life as you knew it for 9 months, well, okay some people do have a rougher time than others with morning sickness or bed rest but overall it is just a time when the body takes on another role and it needs to make some minor alterations.

I have not gained much weight, I think I am up to 16 pounds now and although that sounds like a lot or a little depending on your vantage point, the truth is, it is comfortable for me.  Is it easy, no?  You really want to eat and eat when you’re pregnant because we are conditioned to believe we can but this is the time when you really need to listen to your body, be aware of what you are ingesting.  So many people have said this is the time to just eat and enjoy… no it isn’t. This is the time to be as healthy as possible.  Do I eat ice cream and cookies?  You bet!  Everyday there is a treat waiting for me at some point or even multiple times of the day but it is in moderation and in accordance with my caloric expenditure.  Preganancy is not an excuse to gain 40 pounds, it is a reason to add weight according the nutritional needs of your fetus and future child.

I don’t agree with eat and be merry, you are pregnant. I believe eat, be merry and be smart.  You are eating for two, not for twenty and certainly this additional person does not need deep fried chicken smothered in gravy, creamy mashed potatoes, and a glass of whole milk only to be chased down with a heaping bowl of ice cream.  There is time for that when you can work it off later in life.. when you are not pregnant.  Let’s reprogram the pregnancy nutrition thought process… Pregnant equals healthy moderate portions of good food and not pregnant equals go crazy do what you like to your body if that is something you need in your life!
