Boosting Productive Down Time in the Home Office
By Jeff Zbar | February 10, 2009
Today was a busy day in the home office.
I awoke around 5am. I whipped through my email, made some headway on an article, and filed a column.
I fed the kids, packed their lunches, and made sure the door didn’t hit their behinds on the way out
I then walked the dog, returned to do some more writing.
And suddenly found myself with some free time.
So I paid bills.
This may all seem so pedestrian to the uninitiated. But working from home affords us many opps to boost productivity.
While I was between kid-feedings, I worked from the laptop in the kitchen — doing double duty of spending “quality” time with them, while also logging on to Gmail and checking my Google Calendar.
While I walked the dog, I had my Blackberry, with which I was able to make a few calls and check — and reply to — some emails.
By the time I returned, some images I’d requested via those emails from PR people for my column(s) during that dog walk had arrived to my inbox. So I forwarded them along.
With all that productivity putting work behind me, I was able to log on to my bank’s online bill-pay feature and pay some bills (no small feat in today’s economy).
With the right technology and a focus on boosting productivity and finding good use of slivers of time that surround us (often with us not even knowing said slivers actually exist), we can make stuff happen.
Like all those happy faces my payees will sport once the checks come in. All because I was able to log on, log in or otherwise be just a bit more productive.
So, how’s your Tuesday so far…?
