Tech Balances That Place Called Home Office
By Jeff Zbar | January 25, 2009
I use a laptop computer in my bed.
I use two-line portable phones throughout the home, with a wireless headset that allows me to roam the home.
I have a fax machine that transforms in-bound faxes into PDFs, and then sends them to my email inbox.
In short, I use all the latest and trusted technology to empower my home office.
It’s not expensive — in some instances. If you have to have a fax machine anyway, why not buy a “broadband fax” that serves more than the simple needs of a traditional fax machine? From Sharp, the device costs less than $100, plugs into your broadband router, and brings a new level of functionality to the home office.
Use a portable phone? In the home office, they’re critical. So buy a two-line phone — with caller ID. This way, the phone does double duty for both the home and home office.
Ditto for the headset. In fact, some models use Bluetooth technology to interoperate between the traditional and cellular phone.
Right about now, you’re probably saying, “That’s great. Just wait until I get my share of the economic stimulus package to fund all this…”
Not necessary. Many of these products aren’t expensive. You can find them at off-price electronic retailers, discount stores or at online retailers.
The bigger issue is how you can transform you home office into a digital workspace that gently glides between home and work.
Do that, and you’ll find (digital) balance in your work environment.
