Hitting the Home Stretch in the Home & Office

By Jeff Zbar | December 2, 2008

We’re two days into December. Next year is less than 30 days away.

Are you ready…?

Talk to your friends or other home office allies, drop the line “Can you believe it’s December,” and listen to their responses. Watch their faces. Part shock, part excitement, part concern for what tomorrow holds, the mix of emotions is palpable. The older you get, the more Father Time, with his long robes and flowing, white beard, doesn’t seem that far older than we are ourselves. “Hey bud, wanna break out the AARP cards and go out for a beer?”

Get over the Shock & Awe that December brings, and plan for tomorrow.

First, think about what you’ve accomplished this year. Did you grow your business? Did you save enough for college, retirement, a rainy day (which many pundits and experts expect 2009 might be filled with, at least from an economic perspective)?

On a personal level, did you move your soul a little farther down the spiritual road than it was 11+ months ago? Have you explored life, taken a big trip, learned to play guitar, spent more time with your family, made new, lasting friends? These are the gems that make life rewarding — today and tomorrow.

Second, take stock in your business — and yourself. To paraphrase the commercial, where do you want to go tomorrow? If you want to grow your business, what will it take? What relationships do you want to nurture, whom do you want to meet (for example, leaders in your business or people you’ve admired), how do you want to set yourself — professionally and personally — up for tomorrow?

Finally, remember those around you. Reach out to friends and allies. December is a great time for That Lunch that you’ve been promising to have with a client, a peer, a vendor or even a prospect all year long. Leave the business speak at home, and get to know them beyond the professional arena.

Next Year offers hope and promise. To be sure, the economic chips still haven’t fallen in full, and much is left to be determined. It could be bumpy.

But it certainly will be even more bumpy, shocking and frightfully awesome if you don’t have a plan for your future, and friends to share it with.
