Saturday Mornings Create a Pattern in the Home Office

By Jeff Zbar | November 15, 2008

Laptop’s powered up. ESPN’s on the bedroom big screen. Kids are lazing around the home, and I’ve relocated my home office to the master bed. Same as last week. Probably same as next.

See a pattern here?

Lazy Saturdays are great days to get stuff done — with no phone calls, no flood of emails, no weekday rush of getting the kids off to school or the wife off to work. I can organize my digital life, and get a bit productive. I can work on my social networking sites, my blogs, a few articles, all with the hope of getting some paying work done.

But the key is to get something — anything — accomplished during this quiet time. The week is so frenetic that it’s sometimes hard to move the needle of productivity.

So I access Google Docs, download a document or two, and do a little editing. I check Google Calendar to see what kids’ events are lined up for the family (meaning, whom will I be driving where when the morning turns to afternoon?).

I check my Google Alerts (a very cool — and free — tool for anyone wanting to stay abreast of any topic of interest, whether work, pleasure, pastime, hobby, sport, etc.), to see what news has unfolded on the Web and blogosphere over the past day.

So much can be done with tech in the connected home. I might even get to watch some football between Google, Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sessions.

After all, computing and college football share top billing on Saturdays.

And I don’t even have to leave my bed to accomplish either.
