A Glimpse of Tomorrow’s College Student Today
By Jeff Zbar | October 15, 2008
This week, I’ve left the home office and I’m at the University of Florida, participating in the Department of Journalism’s Alumni Advisory Council.
About 15 of us — all working journalists — are here to peek at current courses, advise on curriculum changes and see what role new media (blogging, social media, animation and video) fits into today’s student’s courses and tomorrow’s newsroom (”Newsroom” being an undefined term to be defined elsewhere in the future…).
In the meantime, I got a glimpse of how smart college kids are, and how hyper-competitive it will be for my kids to find a spot at this in a year or three. Most are weak in business, personal branding and future positioning skills. That will come in time — hopefully before they hit the streets, parchment in hand, in search of their first gig.
My kids are young, but they’re smart. They work hard. They’re racking up the service hours and extra-curriculars. But a day in a college town just reveal how hard it’s going to be to find a spot in a well-regarded school.
My advice: Work hard, build your brand (even in high school), persist with uber-tenacity, and have passion for whatever it is you do.
And make sure, whatever you do, have fun in life.
