Who Are Today’s Home Office Workers?

By Jeff Zbar | October 5, 2008

I was just commenting on Des Walsh’s ThinkingHomeBusiness Website about who works from home. He had the number in the 20 million range. I thought it much more than that.

In fact, I said I believe almost EVERYONE has a home office (tho’ not necessarily a home-based business). The stats, available at Chief Home Officer.com, break down as such:

- 14 million full-time 1099ers

- 24 million teleworkers (employees who work from home for a boss elsewhere)

- About 9 million moonlighters (people who work other jobs by day, but who run some business - crafts, eBay, etc. - from home nights and weekends)

- 40 million day-extenders (white collar folk who bring home a briefcase nights and weekends)

- The innumerable heads of household handling family finances and affairs from their home office (no ‘business,’ per se, unless you count the business of life - bills, checks, kids’ homework, etc.. To me, that’s a pretty big audience - and makes this home-office ‘universe much, much larger. And important…

Between home office furniture, organization and productivity, they’re all looking for insights to improve their home offices. Heck, almost 20 years into this gig, and I’m still looking to improve my home-based workspace…

I was a bit mystified by this at first, because I could not recall quoting a figure. So I had another look at my post and realized you were referring to my quote from Brandie Kajino’s post on her site - http://www.thehomeofficeorganizer.com/blog-world-08-recap/ where she gives a figure of 28 million people in the US working from home.

But whatever the numbers, you’re right: we are all looking for ways to do it better - even the 20 year vets like you and I!
