Presidential Debates, Afternoon Re-Runs & Home Office Organization

By Jeff Zbar | October 3, 2008

The vice presidential candidates debated last night. Lenny Briscoe chased down a perp yesterday afternoon. And I watched — or worked — with the two events never interrupting my efforts.

As a home office worker, I’ve designed my space with many things: Great home office furniture, organizational tools (trays, folders, even better computer-based filing techniques), and my new ergonomic chair. But one thing that I never even considered putting in my home office was a television set.

I have a hard time turning off reruns of Law & Order. And when must-see TV events like the vice presidential debate comes on, there’s not way my mind can split time between Joe, Sarah and work.

So I long ago decided the TV had no place in my home office.

Sure, I watch my share of YouTube videos. And since I often don’t stay up late enough to catch Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert, I’ll watch their shows in their entirety the next day through streaming video.

I guess I do have a TV in my home office. It just happens to be the PC I work on. So it’s incumbent upon me to keep my mind and distractions organized. I do a pretty good job. It’s a test of wills sometime. I try to keep the big DMZ pretty secure between work and tube. I take lunch (all 10 minutes of it) over news or SportsCenter. Once my toaster-ovened pizza is done, I’m back at work. And when the kids come home and turn on the TV, I’ll close my door to avoid distraction.

It works pretty well at keeping me focused and the work flowing — until I catch a glimpse of Lenny on the beat. Then all bets are off…
