Staying Productive With So Much Good TV On
By Jeff Zbar | August 19, 2008
I’m no TV junkie in the home office. In fact, I don’t catch my first afternoon re-run until at least 3 pm, and primetime in our household doesn’t start until well after dinner.
Surely, I jest. In seriousness, except for 15 minutes of TV over lunch, the tube doesn’t come on in the household until deep into primetime (exclusive of the kids’ viewing habits, of course). It’s part of staying organized and focused in the home office.
But with the Olympics and the Little League World Series going head to head, I struggle to stay focused during the workday.
I’m Jeff Zbar, and I’m a recovering sports TV junkie.Managing TV viewing and other distractions in the home office is a challenge for most. I start by keeping the television out of my home office. I don’t even have a cable outlet. I’m no gamer, though our family has three different gaming consoles (Playstation II and III and the Wii). I’m clueless as to how to use them. And I play no games online, and am more inclined to surf news sites and home office blogs than lose myself in some gaming site
I also truly limit what I’ll allow myself to watch during lunch. Law & Order invariably will draw me in. So it’s sports headlines over lunch, or a bit of news (which invariably will turn me off sufficiently to switch off the tube in turn).
If I know a good event will be on any given day, I’ll awaken early and focus on making some headway on my deadlines in order to sneak a bit of time watching.
But then I discovered that NBC streams certain events live across the Web. And big ticket events — like women’s soccer, softball or beach volleyball — seem to capture my attention.
Alas, this will not persist. I find comfort in the fact that the Olympics will end before August does.
But then, hockey and football will debut anew.
I’m Jeff Zbar, and I remain a recovering home office TV-aholic.
